A swarm of butterflies dance in my stomach, the tears fade, and my heart is light again.
Sam touches my shoulders. âYou okay?â
I look up. âYeah. I think I will be.â
CHAPTER 29
Francesca comes bouncing out of her room. I catch her skipping back and forth past the bathroom. She grabs the fabric of her black dress in her fist and lifts her hand in the air, striking a pose. Iâm in awe of how her curves look in that dress. Around her neck sits a beautiful Christmas tree scarf she made herself. Sheâs stunning. The subtle makeup job she did looks fierce, yet natural, and her curls sit perfectly tight against her shoulder.
âDamn,â I say, peeking over the small makeup mirror. âEven Iâd kiss you!â
Francesca chuckles. She lets go of her dress, then takes in my appearance. Iâm a mess. I canât even keep my hands steady to put on my makeup. The only two things on my mind involve an explosive kiss, and the other is Mom starting on me. This would be so much easier if the first option was the only one.
âGirl, why arenât you dressed?â Francesca folds her arms at her chest, glaring at me.
âMy makeup looks terrible.â
I stare at myself in the mirror again. I twist side to side to get a better look. I hate the tiny specks of pimples that have popped up on my right cheek. I tried covering them with a concealer, but it didnât work.
Her footsteps catch my attention and I avert my eyes back to her.
âWhy do you look as if youâre going to have a panic attack?â Francesca asks.
She pushes my hand away, taking the powder brush, and sits beside me on the edge of the porcelain tub. My makeup mirror is propped up on the closed toilet seat. Standing to put on my makeup was too hard, because my knees are shaking as much as my hands.
I close my eyes as she pats my face with some more makeup.
âSweetheart, youâre shaking. Whatâs going on?â
I place my hands between my legs to get them to stop. She puts the brush down and rests her hand over my bare leg. Itâs not awkward or weird, weâve known each other too long for that. Iâm only in my corset and my black lace underwear.
âIâve never seen you this nervous before.â
I sigh. âIâm afraid Iâm going to screw this entire thing up. He was so withdrawn at school, like he was afraid to love me. Then Daryl showed up and you could feel the jealousy rolling off him. What if heâs still hung up on Roxanne? I canât go through another Lloyd situation again.â
I go to rub my face and pause. I donât have time to mess up the makeup, Sam should be here in twenty minutes.
âMen get scared too. He looks at you with such admiration, he canât pull his eyes away. From what Iâve heard from Sam is that she would beg him to be with her, heâd fall hard, and then sheâd pull back.
